Republic of Ireland eye up Murphy twins for duty

The Mail Online are reporting that the Republic of Ireland are eyeing up both Jacob and Josh Murphy for international duty.

The Irish FA are currently exploring whether the Norwich twins are eligible to switch nationalities from England, after catching the eye following their impressive starts to the season.

While the 21 year old brothers have been capped a number of times for England at multiple youth level sides, they are yet to make an appearance for Gareth Southgate in the Under 21’s team, which leaves the door open for a switch. Thanks to FIFA’s generous eligibility rules, only reaching under 21 or senior level teams rules out a national team switch.

The Republic of Ireland will be keen to stamp their authority on rising talent in England, after losing out in a very public tug of war over Jack Grealish. Grealish is now a regular starter in Southgate’s squad and played for the successful Toulon Tournament side over the summer, also featuring ex-Canary Nathan Redmond.

With Jacob appearing to be developing faster than his brother Josh, particularly this season, it could be possible to have one twin playing for Ireland and the other for England. That has ‘football pub quiz question’ written all over it.
