Norwich City today entered the race to sign Roma’s Italian striker, Mattia Destro, by reportedly submitting an offer for the Italianinternational. According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, City have joined negotiations just as Serie A club, Bologna, began talks with Destro’s agent which seem to have hit a snag. In the words of the Italian media giants, “something is still missing”, and after the Yellows’ opening day loss to Crystal Palace, the same applies to Alex Neil’s front line.
Aside from Norwich and Bologna, Destro has also been scouted by Bayer Leverkusen of the German Bundesliga, who are likely to wait in the wings should neither of the actively interested parties secure the striker’s service. However, it is believed that the Germans are as yet undecided on the Roma man, who went on loan to AC Milan during the closing half of last season and only scored 3 goals in the process. A surprising statistic, given his previous form for ‘the Wolves’, with whom he netted 24 times in the Italian top-flight and had an impressive goal ratio of, approximately one goal every other game. Therefore, the forward, born out of the same mould as Lewis Grabban, could be a valuable addition to Alex Neil’s attacking options.
Although Destro looks set to join Bologna, he may be tempted by the glamour of the Premier League, as well as a supposedly bigger wage package than the one he would receive in the Emilia-Romagna region of his homeland. A fresh challenge with the new kids on the block in England’s top-flight might be what he needs to reignite his own career.
