Norwich City academy product, Remi Matthews rejoined League 2 champions Burton Albion on Monday evening, confirmed by the club as a loan transfer which runs until 2nd January. The 21 year-old, who signed a 2 year professional contract in 2014, returns to the Staffordshire club after a 1 month loan spell there last December during which he failed to make an appearance.
The youngster’s Football career started in 2004, when he was recruited into City’s academy at the age of 10 and took up a full scholarship offer in 2010.
The transfer leaves Alex Neil’s Playoff champions in need of a 3rd Goalkeeper, with their only senior stoppers being John Ruddy and his understudy Declan Rudd and with Matthews already entering the final season of his contract, the Gorleston-born ‘keeper appears to be set for an exit in the Summer, or during January when his loan period comes to an end.
Matthews, though may be consigned to another reserve role with the Brewers in the long-term, although the loanee may make his debut against Scunthorpe United on 8th August, as Dean Lyness makes a comeback from a broken leg injury sustained last November and may not be risked by Manager Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink, while last season’s first choice Jon McLaughlin will be suspended for the opening day.
Burton’s loan move for the fledgling Englishman fits in with the Canaries’ manager’s belief that youth players who get a taste of the men’s game should continue their development as a senior player in the lower league; as City supporters prepare to keep an eye of their man’s progress at the League 1 newboys.
