What Norwich’s pursuit of a right winger means for Matej Jurasek
  • Norwich City want to bolster their squad when the summer transfer window opens.
  • The Canaries are looking to add a right winger to their squad.
  • What a new right winger signing could mean for Matej Jurasek.

The goal for Philippe Clement and Norwich City next season is promotion to the Premier League after finishing ninth in the Championship this year.

After four seasons in the second tier, the Canaries want to avoid becoming the next Queens Park Rangers or Stoke City, trudging through midtable for years and years.

In order to reach their desired destination, Norwich will have to improve their squad when the summer transfer window officially opens for business.

Norwich want to sign a new winger

The Canaries have reportedly made signing a new right winger a priority ahead of the summer, as Clement wants to add more quality in that position.

When it was confirmed that Tony Springett will leave the club at the end of his contract, Clement said: “We want to invest also in his best position to get somebody in with extra quality.”

The Belgian, therefore, has confirmed that the club want a top-quality addition in that role, rather than a young loanee or a squad filler signing to make up the numbers.

Supporters should expect Ben Knapper to target and recruit a high-quality right winger who can make an instant impact with goals and assists next season, given what the target for the campaign is.

Norwich’s current right wing options

At the time of writing, Norwich have Ante Crnac, Oscar Schwartau Matej Jurasek, Papa Diallo, Amankwah Forson, and Jovon Makama who can play out wide on the right.

However, Schwartau and Forson are more natural number tens, Makama is a centre-forward, and Diallo is a left-sided winger, whilst it remains to be seen where Clement sees Crnac.

The Croatia U21 international has been used as both a striker and as a right winger during his time at Carrow Road, but he has yet to play a game under the Belgian and how he is used in pre-season will be telling.

That leaves Jurasek, at the moment, as the only natural right wing option in the squad, as it is his preferred and best position, which cannot be said for any of the others.

Where Norwich’s right wing signing leaves Matej Jurasek

It is fair to say that the Czechia international has not had the most enjoyable spell in England since his £5.8m move from Slavia Prague in January 2025.

Jurasek showed some signs of promise early on in Clement’s reign, producing a sublime assist for Josh Sargent away at QPR and scoring against Walsall in the FA Cup.

Unfortunately, though, he sustained a foot injury in February that ultimately ruled him out for the rest of the campaign, which means that he only made 21 appearances in his first one-and-a-half seasons at the club.

Now, the pursuit of a first-choice, top-quality, right winger means that Jurasek is unlikely to be given a free run at a starting spot next season.

With his fitness issues, however, that could be for the best. At the age of 22, the left-footed star still has the majority of his career left ahead of him and playing second-fiddle to the new signing could make sense for him.

Jurasek has failed to show that he can be available on a consistent basis, which suggests that starting regularly would be too tall of an ask.

Therefore, being the second-choice right winger and starting the odd game, whilst getting minutes as a substitute, could be the perfect next step to getting his career in Norfolk on track.

So instead of looking at a new signing coming in as a blow for Jurasek, the 22-year-old should see it as an opportunity to compete with that player and finally prove himself in East Anglia next season.
