- The end of an era.
- A great player, coach and pundit.
- One of the best penalty takers in the club’s history.
This season saw Neil Adams stand down as Assistant Sporting Director. After a season of ups and downs, it is worth paying tribute to one of the most consistent ambassadors for Norwich City.
Player
Neil Adams was signed from Oldham for £250,000 in 1994. During this time he became renowned as a set piece specialist, especially penalties.
In fact, Adams only missed one penalty in his career, a League Cup against Swansea.
If that wasn’t enough in 1996 he became Norwich’s second top goal scorer with 16 goals, an impressive feat for a midfielder.
Manager
Adams’ most impressive managerial record was at youth level, where his Under 18 team beat Chelsea in the 2013 FA Youth Cup. This is a team that included the likes of Harry Toffolo, Carlton Morris, as well as Jacob and Josh Murphy.
While these players have had varying degrees of success they definitely benefited from Adams’ coaching.
Sadly, his stint as manager of the first team was mainly known for a decent start, then a drop-off, and him being replaced by Alex Neil, who led us to promotion at Wembley..
Adams has also add other roles within the club including loan player manager, assistant sporting director and technical director, providing continuity between the Delia Smith and Attanasio eras.
Pundit
Neil Adams’ arguably most well known role outside of his playing days is his stint as a pundit on Radio Norfolk.
No Canary Call was complete without someone calling saying “ ‘Allo Neyul!” or “What da ya think o’that?”
Adams to his credit came across well, offering honest analysis and patience, even during more fractious call-in sessions. He seemed genuinely interested in everyone’s opinions but equally would know how to press and get more from someone to get their point.
While some would hype up the game while commenting, he offered a contrast without coming across as overly dour or negative.
A great example
The term “role model” can be overused but in the case of Neil Adams it is appropriate.
This is someone who worked hard as a player, as part of one of the best Norwich City squads of all time. Even amongst greats like Sutton, Fox or Goss he provided an important role in our midfield.
Whatever his role, Adams always seemed to care about his contribution to the club.
For players, coaches and pundits alike he is a great example to learn from.
Enjoy your retirement Neil, you’ve earned it!
