Nestory Irankunda: Does it make sense for Norwich City?

  • Fans have speculated that Norwich could make a move for Nestory Irankunda.
  • Watford winger is set to star alongside Mo Toure for Australia this summer.
  • Analysing whether or not Irankunda fits the bill for the Canaries.

Earlier this week we at ReadNorwich assessed whether or not it made sense for the club to pursue a deal for Plymouth Argyle striker Lorent Tolaj.

The Swiss forward has been linked with a move to Carrow Road in the summer transfer window, and we ultimately decided that it would be a sensible piece of business by Ben Knapper.

Whilst there have been legitimate reports linked Norwich City to players, such as Tolaj, there have also been suggestions thrown out by supporters via social media.

Norwich told to sign Championship winger

Numerous Norwich fans have predicted or suggested that the Canaries will or should sign Nestory Irankunda from Championship rivals Watford this summer.

The 20-year-old forward is friends and international teammates with Norwich centre-forward Mohamed Toure, and the pair are set to play alongside each other at the World Cup for Australia.

The speculation was recently fuelled by Irankunda allegedly liking a TikTok post about the forward making a move to Norwich in the off-season.

It is easy to understand why this ‘rumour’ has spread. The Watford youngster was a former Bayern Munich prodigy, heavily hyped on social media, and it would be a fun story if he joined to play alongside Toure.

The question is, does this make sense for Norwich?

Does it make sense for Norwich?

The Canaries will be in the market to sign a right winger this summer.

When it was confirmed that Tony Springett will leave the club, Clement said: “We want to invest also in his best position to get somebody in with extra quality.”

In January, the Belgian boss also revealed that he would prefer to have a left-footed player on the right, which is why he played Harry Amass there against Coventry off the bench in his only appearance for the club.

At Rangers, Clement signed left-footed right winger Vaclav Cerny to be his first-choice wide option at Ibrox.

With this in mind, Irankunda does not appear to fit the bill for Norwich. He is a right-footed player who has made 76 club starts as a right winger, and only 19 on the left. Only three of his Watford outings have come on the left side.

With four goals and four assists in 39 appearances in the Championship, the Australian star also does not seem to be the ready-made product that Norwich now need on the right flank.

For context, Ante Crnac scored seven goals and provided four assists in 38 games at a similar age in the same position in the 2024/25 campaign for Norwich.

Final verdict

Ultimately, it is nothing more than a fan theory based on TikTok posts and a friendship, so we cannot take it too seriously.

But, for the reasons mentioned above, it is one that does not make sense for Norwich in reality, when you consider what Clement wants in his main position.

Some may then argue that he could be used on the left, but then Irankunda would be away from his best position and competing with Ali Ahmed, Oscar Schwartau, and Papa Amadou Diallo.

This is all without taking into account what Watford would demand from a Championship rival for his services, after they signed him from Bayern for £3.4m last summer.

A fun fan suggestion, yes, but do not expect this one to turn into reality over the course of the summer transfer window…
