Clement refuses to rule out Toure start for Norwich at Millwall: “We need to decide”

Norwich City are in action for the second time in four days when they travel to The Den to take on Millwall in the Championship on Easter Monday.

The Canaries were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-battling Portsmouth on Good Friday, after making a series of changes to the starting line-up due to injury and fitness concerns.

Jose Cordoba, Ali Ahmed, and Anis Ben Slimane started on the bench after playing for their countries during the break, whilst Ben Chrisene, Mohamed Toure, and Jack Stacey returned to the bench after their respective injuries.

After coming off the bench to play in the second half against Portsmouth, Philippe Clement has provided an update on Toure’s fitness.

Clement on Toure’s availability against Millwall

The Belgian head coach sat down at Colney to speak with reporters on Sunday ahead of the trip to London on Monday, and he provided an injury update on the squad.

When asked by the Pink Un’s Paddy Davitt if Toure could start, Clement said: “We need to decide tomorrow (if he can start), he cannot play 90 minutes yet, that is normal.”

The Australia international had been out of action since he sustained a groin injury in the first half of the 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on 25th February.

After playing 27 minutes of the 1-1 draw with Portsmouth on Friday, Clement is now refusing to rule out the possibility of him starting against Millwall.

Mathias Kvistgaarden, however, will be needed because the manager has confirmed that Toure will not play the full 90 minutes, which means that the Dane will either be needed as a starter or as a substitute.

Why Mo Toure should start against Millwall

Provided that he is fit enough to start and play around 60 minutes, the former Randers star should take Kvistgaarden’s place in the XI.

The Denmark international has struggled at times this season, as he is not a typical Clement centre-forward, and is on a run of seven matches without a goal.

Toure, though, scored four goals in his first four Championship matches with the Canaries, including scoring a hat-trick against Oxford United.

The 22-year-old marksman has the physical profile that the manager wants from his number nine, having won 55% of his ground duels in the league so far.

Clement wants physical and powerful runners who can stretch the defence and hold the ball up under pressure, and that is not Kvistgaarden’s natural game.

That is why, if he is able to, Toure should start against Millwall, an incredibly physical team, to provide the Canaries with the outlet that they need in the number nine role.

Kvistgaarden can then use his energy off the bench to be a nuisance to tired defenders in the second half at The Den.
