‘Like a fine wine’: Praise for Mayor McLean from both Farke and Clement

Kenny McLean has confirmed he will remain at City next season after the club triggered a one-year extension in his contract, securing his stay through to the summer of 2027.

Speaking on BBC Radio Norfolk’s The Scrimmage on Monday night, the 34-year-old captain said the decision was actually finalised during the tenure of former manager Johannes Hoff Thorup, who left the club in April 2025.

“I didn’t want any attention on me,” McLean said. “But yes, I’ll be here next season. We’ve triggered that year. That was under Johannes. I didn’t think it was necessary to announce it.”

The confirmation arrived less than 24 hours after McLean became only the 24th player in Norwich City’s history to reach 300 appearances, starting Sunday’s 3-0 FA Cup fifth-round defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road.

The FA Cup defeat and the contract news

City’s cup run ended against a Leeds side managed by former Canaries boss Daniel Farke, but what it did was give the German the opportunity to pass comment on the Scot, who was signed during his tenure at Norwich:

“A great achievement and congratulations and well done to Kenny. Fantastic player, he was unbelievably important for us when we brought him in. It feels like he’s like a good wine – he’s getting better and better the older he gets.”

Farke continued, emphasising McLean’s influence on the current City:

“He’s still a key player and also, in my preparation for this game, I spoke more about Kenny McLean than about anyone else, because he runs the game. A fantastic player, a fantastic human being and it’s always great to see him. He leads the team because he has also got this competitive edge. It’s always a great pleasure to see Kenny, because on and off the pitch he’s fantastic.”

McLean’s contract news on Monday offered some uplifting news after the slightly deflating but not unexpected 3-0 defeat. For a club that has whizzed through Daniel Farke, Dean Smith, David Wagner, Thorup, Liam Manning, and now Philippe Clement since McLean arrived from Aberdeen in January 2018, retaining the Mayor’s services has provided some much-needed continuity.

“My right hand on the field”

Clement made his feelings clear before the Leeds match. “There are not many figures like that in modern football,” the head coach said. “It shows how loyal he is to the club, he is a massive figure. Kenny is my right hand on the field.”

McLean, for his part, sounded focused on what comes next rather than the milestone behind him.

“The way we’ve gone over the last few months with the manager, the form table would tell you that we should be challenging,” he said. “Norwich are a club where that should always be the ambition. It was at the start of the season, we put ourselves in a difficult position. But everything is in place. It’s down to us as players to be better consistently.”

That the extension was agreed under Thorup rather than Clement suggests the decision to retain an experienced dressing-room leader was made by Sporting Director Ben Knapper.

What happens now

McLean is 34. He is not going to anchor our midfield forever, and succession planning will need to be considered, if it hasn’t already. Some have suggested that Jacob Wright will be that man, albeit further down the track.

But right now, with Clement’s side sitting 18th and ten points clear of relegation after a strong 2026, the captain’s presence among a very young squad that is still learning is invaluable.

City return to Championship action tomorrow night against Sheffield United at Carrow Road, where Kenny will be guaranteed a stirring and well-deserved ovation.

Here’s to another 300 🙂
