The EFL Cup is the perfect chance for Daniel Farke to hand out minutes to the fringe players in his squad, to maintain match-fitness across the board.
Players like Sam Byram, Ralf Fahrmann, Mario Vrancic and Josip Drmic – who were all on the bench against Liverpool – could be handed their first starts of the season in the competition, giving them an opportunity to shine.
Of course, a home game would have been ideal as it would involve less travel for the players between important Premier League matches, but you cannot have it all your own way and Farke will need to use his squad well to avoid fatigue for the regular first-team players.
