Aston Villa have announced the signing of goalkeeper Mark Bunn, after his contract with Norwich City was not extended.
Bunn, who is 30-years-old, has signed for Villa on a two-year deal and will most likely be Tim Sherwood’s second choice ‘keeper after American Brad Guzan. Initially, it was thought that he may be on the move to Bristol City, but the offering of a higher wage and playing standard made it an easy decision for Bunn.
Upon joining his new club, he had this to say to the official club website:
“I’m delighted to find myself working with Tony Parks again as he was the goalkeeping coach at Norwich City so he knows me really well.
“Aston Villa is a huge football club and this was too good an opportunity to miss out on.
“I’m looking forward to getting to know my new team-mates over in Portugal at our pre-season training camp and I can’t wait to get started.”
Bunn joined the Canaries from Blackburn Rovers after spending time at a number of clubs including Northampton Town, Kettering Town, Leicester City and Sheffield United.
He featured the most for Northampton but left when Premier League’s Blackburn came calling.
After playing a bit-part role for the Rovers, he moved to Norwich in 2012 to compete with John Ruddy.
London-born Bunn, who is also eligible to play for Republic of Ireland, played in over 20 matches in the three years he’s been at Carrow Road but failed to dethrone Ruddy. Last season he fell even further out of favour, becoming third choice behind Declan Rudd, at which point is commitment to the club declined significantly.
