New York Praise Puts Kenny McLean Back In World Cup Spotlight

Kenny McLean has been dragged back into the World Cup spotlight after New York mayor Zohran Mamdani used the Norwich City captain as the emotional centrepiece of a speech about the tournament.

According to The Scottish Sun, Mamdani urged New Yorkers to “channel their inner Kenny McLean” as the city prepares to host eight World Cup matches, including the final.

The reference was to McLean’s extraordinary long-range goal in Scotland’s 4-2 win over Denmark at Hampden Park, the night Steve Clarke’s side ended a 28-year wait to reach the World Cup.

McLean Moment Still Carries Global Weight

For Norwich, the line lands neatly because McLean is not merely a Scotland story. He remains one of the most recognisable senior figures at Carrow Road, with his official club profile listing him as a Scotland international who signed for the Canaries in January 2018.

The timing is also sharp. Scotland are sweating on last-32 permutations after their 3-0 defeat to Brazil, with The Guardian noting that their progress now depends on the third-place table.

McLean’s club return will eventually matter just as much as the tournament romance. Philippe Clement needs his captain physically intact, mentally fresh and ready to reset a Norwich midfield already being reshaped for the Championship campaign.
