- Stadium renovation is underway with emphasis on “premium” experiences.
- What I feel would benefit Norwich City fans across the board.
- Important to not to lose sight of what makes experience special – the fans.
With recent reports that Norwich City stadium renovations are underway, I can’t help think that there are aspects of the “experience” that could be improved away from the premium packages and entertainment villages in the works.
Here are my suggestions for Norwich City stadium improvements.
More toilets
Without wanting to be crude, you are in a stadium with thousands of other people. Having more toilets would mean less queues and fewer moments missed as fans pop out to use the facilities.
Eating areas
I don’t necessarily think you need anything fancy but more picnic style tables or sheltered areas would be good for folks who have bought items from the stands outside, not to mention would give people an easier meeting point during games.
Improved disabled facilities
While Carrow Road is not the only stadium guilty of this, one area that should be looked at with Norwich City stadium improvements is improved stadium facilities and disabled access.
According to the Community Sports Foundation, 20 per cent of people in Norfolk have disabilities. While there is an area at the front of the South Stand, and within the stadium, I would consider looking at where this can be expanded.
Maintain community links
Norwich City already has some great community projects such as the Community Sports Foundation and the Canaries Mental Health Trust. There are also regular match day appearances from the Norwich Foodbank.
It is worth reviewing where there can be more communication between these groups and having more spaces to promote and encourage these projects.
More theme nights
The recent “Retro Night” theme was a brilliant idea and it would be interesting to see if there are other ways that this could be explored.
There is the risk of it becoming a novelty but anything that can be fun and engage with fans should help to boost the atmosphere.
Remember the fans
I get why the board is looking at premium experiences and ways to attract business clientele. It makes sense- these are people who will potentially spend more money.
But what marks out a Norwich City stadium from a conference centre or tourist trap is the atmosphere. What the board must never forget is that the regular fans are what make the experience real.
By all means find ways to boost funds, I get that. But don’t forget the people that make it happen!
