Norwich City stadium redevelopment underway – What is the “premium experience?”

  • Stadium redevelopment begins with overhauling hospitality.
  • Gunn Club renamed Club NR1.
  • Emphasis on “premium”- but what does that entail?

Work has begun on stadium redevelopment at Carrow Road. Norwich City fans have been curious as the club hierarchy has spoken of a new “premium experience” that is coming. But what does this entail?

Sign of the times

One of the biggest changes currently happening is on the hospitality side. The Gunn Club is set to be renamed Club NR1 and receive an overhaul.

Among other things, this will include games such as table football and air hockey, more seating options and a brand new “street food” menu.

This menu will apparently also come with a new app, though hopefully there will still be the option to talk to someone and order food.

Now if you’ll excuse me I am going to wave my fist at a passing cloud.

Bonus

So far, while this sounds good, cynics may ask what additional value this provides.

Members of Club NR1 will be able to enjoy a quarterly event with a club legend (I’m personally hoping to go wine tasting with Marc Libbra) while also being able to have an interview with a player after the match, so you can ask your Canary Call-type question about what they are doing in person.

Still Gunning

Fortunately, the Gunn Club hasn’t gone entirely, with Yellows Bar and Grill being renamed The Gunn Club at Yellows, providing the benefits of the Gunn Club there as well as a private bar area.

For people outside the members, there is also talk of an “enhanced supporter village” outside the South Stand, which will include live entertainment and more “family-friendly activities.”

Premium

If you had a drink for every time for the word “premium” popped up in the description of these upcoming improvements I hope it was non-alcoholic and if not please seek medical attention immediately.

It is easy to be cynical (fun too), but I do also want to give some credit where it is due.

For example, the Retro Night idea was a really fun idea and added to the atmosphere during the game. If they can come up with ideas like this that bring people together, then this is positive, and I’m all for it.

What I hope is that while these hospitality aspects of the stadium improvements are a lure for more tourists, casual fans and business events, the need to preserve the feeling of a match day is not forgotten.
