- Striker success requires balance of selfless teamwork and clinical greed.
- Mo Toure proves that finding the right scoring instinct is vital now.
- City’s attacking depth offers Clement diverse options for next season.
When it comes to strikers, there does need to be an element of greed.
Greed
In an iconic speech, Michael Douglas’ Gordon Gekko infamously said: “Greed (for lack of a better term) is good.”
You have to be someone who will want to step up for a penalty, who will fight to get at the goal and do everything to be in the right place at the right time.
Toure
Mohammed Toure celebrated his third goal against Bristol City.
While everyone was happy, Paris Maghoma may be feeling a little miffed that his third was essentially a lucky deflection.
But to his credit he was graceful enough to let Toure have his moment.
But not too much
That being said there is a difference between working hard to get goals and being a prima donna.
For all of Nelson Olivera’s skills, he could often cancel that out with a spikiness that didn’t always gel with the team dynamic.
As much as I adore Darren Huckerby, it’s fair to say his swashbuckling on the wing was balanced out by the consistency of Adam Drury behind him.
In the modern game strikers also have to work hard.
Goals are important but you also have to know when to hold the ball, when to play in other team mates and to feint runs to allow someone else a clearer run on goal.
Balance
Increasingly massive centre forwards or goal-hanging strikers are a rarer commodity in football now.
This is also why the lies of Erling Haaland or Alexander Isak are highly sought after.
As more teams have flowing dynamic formations finding the additional extra element that the opposition doesn’t have can be key.
Competition
What is even more exciting for Norwich City fans is what the strikers will be when the team lines up next season.
Jovon Makama has proven to be a rough diamond with a massive goalscoring record in a short time. With his ability to play out wide, he also allows for an extra option.
Mathias Kvistgaarden may not be the first choice, but Clement has praised his work ethic, and he provides some variety in the squad.
Whoever leads the line they need to remember- Yes you want to do your bit for the team but there has to be a bit of that edge.
Don’t be afraid to be (a bit) greedy!
