The response to the Marcelino Nunez letter: From Ipswich to Norwich with love

Share

It’s safe to say that my article in the style of a letter to former Norwich City midfielder Marcelino Nunez – now of the parish of Ipswich – gained a fair bit of traction and has rattled a few cages.

The X post announcing the article currently has 200,000 views, with over 250 replies, and has even made the news tab.

As you may already know, many of those replies weren’t exactly warm and friendly, but in my eyes, any engagement is good engagement. So I give my genuine, heartfelt thanks to those at Ipswich Town for their feedback. I’ll take it on the chin.

So, with that out of the way, let’s take a look at some of the replies the article received on X.

I’ve had to leave out a fair few due to the liberal use of Anglo-Saxon, so try not to be too upset if you haven’t been included. I’ve been called worse by worse people, and I’m sure Nunez has, too, and will be again tomorrow.

The replies…

You considered my work to be a novel? Kind of you, George. In fairness, he does raise a good point – Nunez can’t speak English, but if he’s ever heard of Google Translate, then he can change it into Spanish and can read the ‘novel’.

I must say this one did make me chuckle. The thought of Nunez scribbling on a page with all of his felt tips, coming out with that drawing, calling it ‘lovely jubbly’, then putting it on his fridge at home, put a big smile on my face.

I know Johners1973 clearly isn’t a Norwich fan, but I can think of a few more embarrassing things that have happened to the Canaries over the years. Losing 7-1 to Colchester, losing 6-2 to Plymouth, being relegated to League One, the playoff semi-final defeat to Leeds – I could go on all day.

Yes, he is ‘in our head’

I’ll be the first to admit that, given I wrote the article, it probably was cringe in hindsight.

It’s not something I’m overly proud of, but I can certainly be happy with how many people read it, unlike what Iain here is suggesting.

The Nunez letter is currently the most viewed article across the whole network of Dave.Sport (the company that now owns ReadNorwich), so plenty of people read it, even if it didn’t leave the best impression. Some you win…

So to sum up, yes, Nunez is ‘in my head’ as he will be for a lot of the Carrow Road crowd.

Yes, it was ‘cringe’, and yes, he probably wouldn’t understand it because it’s in English.

We can all move on to Saturday’s game, and who knows? Maybe I’ll have another letter to write to a player who has the final say at Carrow Road.
