Norwich City eased to a 2-0 win over already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday at Carrow Road on Wednesday night (February 25) thanks to first-half goals from Mathias Kvistgaarden and Paris Maghoma.
The result left the Canaries eight points clear of the bottom three with 12 games of the season to go, representing a remarkable turnaround since the appointment of Philippe Clement last November.
Mohamed Toure was forced off after just seven minutes with what looked like a groin injury, leaving Kvistgaarden as City’s only available striker.
The substitute gave the Canaries the lead in the 31st-minute after heading in from close range, before a wonderful piece of skill and an arrowed finish from Maghoma doubled the home side’s advantage.
City controlled the ball in the second-half without creating many clear-cut chances, but ultimately saw the game out to notch their sixth league win of 2026.
Here are five things that caught my eye during the win:
1. Don’t sprint!
Toure’s seven minutes on the pitch against Wednesday came to an abrupt end after the striker busted a gut to latch onto a Jack Stacey through-ball.
The Australian immediately signalled that his race was run, adding to more than a dozen injuries that Clement is having to contend with.
Muscular injuries have been a theme of City’s season, and those inside the club will no doubt notice that Toure’s appears to have been suffered in the same way as Oscar Schwartau, who came off with a hamstring injury during the FA Cup fourth-round win over West Bromwich Albion.
2. Opportunity knocks
Kvistaarden has found starts hard to come by under Clement, but as City’s only fit and available striker he will be relied upon for the last 12 games of the season.
The 23-year-old looked sharp after his seven-minute introduction, showcasing his finishing ability with a devastating first-half strike that was ruled offside.
With six league goals this season, the former Bronby will be looking to hit double figures by early May.
3. Best fans in the league
Delia Smith once said that Norwich has the best supporters in the world, but the hardy Wednesday-ites who made the long trip down to Norfolk on a cold February night could certainly lay claim to that accolade.
Despite their club’s horrendous predicament, hundreds of away fans made plenty of noise in the South Stand throughout the game.
Late in the second-half a Wednesday chant was met with applause from all corners of Carrow Road.
Football fans often get a bad rap, but those inside Carrow Road last night proved that mutual respect still exists.
4. Are you Emi in disguise?
Since the days of Emi Buendia Norwich fans have yearned for another creative midfielder with flicks, tricks and everything in between.
It’s early, but there are signs that Maghoma is the one Carrow Road has been waiting for.
With an ability to glide past defenders and spot things that others can’t, there is every chance that the former Brentford man could become a creative hero.
5. LG is no winger. Definitely, not maybe
The fact that Norwich finished last night’s game with a front three of Liam Gibbs, Tony Springett and Jakov Medic speaks volumes about the depth of the injury crisis facing Clement.
Playing a full 90 minutes will do Gibbs the world of good, but there is no denying that his time spent out wide didn’t pull up any trees.
Gibbs, like all of those brought in from the cold under Clement, gives his all whenever he’s called upon, but questions remain regarding his quality at Championship level.
