Norwich defender Sam McCallum admits that he was surprised by how much the club bid for him in January.
The Canaries signed McCallum from Coventry for an undisclosed fee, but the left-back has revealed that it was a seven-figure sum.
McCallum says that he did not think he was worth as much as he was sold for and that it was a “no-brainer” for him to sign for Norwich.
Speaking to the Kent Gazette, via The Pink’Un, McCallum said:
When I saw a seven-figure bid had been turned down, I thought it was unreal – I didn’t think I’d be worth anywhere near as much as that.
A couple of days before deadline day, my agent phoned me up saying ‘we’re heading over to Norwich.
He gave me time to speak to my family, but it was almost a no-brainer because they’re a Premier League side.
READ NORWICH VERDICT
First of all, it is great to see that McCallum is a humble young lad who does not think that he has already made it. He appears to have a mature head on his shoulders, based off of his comments, and he has not let his price tag get to his head.
Secondly, him saying that it is a no-brainer to sign for Norwich is a sign of how much the club has progressed in recent seasons. The Canaries finished 14th in the Championship in the 2017/18 campaign, but now young players are wanting to join the club and see the project that is underway at Carrow Road.
Hopefully, McCallum will be able to return to Norwich in the summer after his loan spell with Coventry and show that he is ready for the first-team under Daniel Farke.
He will be competing with Jamal Lewis, and possibly Sam Byram, for the left-back spot next season, so he will need to up his game and prove that he can compete at their level.
