Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn would be a “smart” signing for the likes of Norwich City and Sheffield United this summer according to former Leeds United midfielder and BBC Radio Leeds co-commentator Noel Whelan.
McGinn has been one of Villa’s standout players this season helping Dean Smith’s side to finish in a playoff position with six goals and nine assists.
And according to the Birmingham Mail, via Football Insider, Whelan believes the 24-year-old would be a “smart move” for the likes of Norwich and the Blades, when speaking about what clubs should make a move for the midfielder.
I would very much think that Premier League sides, or even sides that are getting promoted already. Sheffield United and Norwich will be looking at players like that who can cope with the demands of the Premier League and also, if they come back down, know they’ve got a player that knows how to get out of the Championship.

That would be a smart move for one of those two sides to go and get a player like him if, and only if, the player wants to leave and the club feel they have to let somebody go like that. I’m pretty sure a club the size of Aston Villa are not a selling club so it’s entirely up to them. If the player feels he wants to give it a shot, then sometimes it’s hard to stand in their way.
A move for McGinn, however, is likely to depend on whether Villa gain promotion to the Premier League through the playoffs this season.
The midfielder could feature for Smith’s side against the Canaries on Sunday afternoon, though he is one yellow card away from suspension after picking up 14 yellow cards this season, and could therefore be rested.
