Michael McGovern signs two year extension with Norwich City

Norwich have today confirmed that they have signed backup goalkeeper Michael McGovern to a new two-year contract extension at the club.

The Northern Irishman has very much been the second choice to Tim Krul this season but has made five appearances in the cup competitions.

Signed after impressing with his country at Euro 2016, McGovern joined on a free transfer from Hamilton Academical.

Despite this, he never managed to hold down a consistent spot, and the arrival of Angus Gunn on loan last season and Tim Krul over the Summer have led to limited opportunities for the Northern Irishman.

However, McGovern has signed a new deal with the Canaries, and looks to be the long term choice as a backup shot-stopper.

Speaking to Canaries.co.uk, McGovern said:

I’m delighted to commit my future to the Club. I know where I’m going to be for the next couple of years now and it’s a Club on the up so there are very exciting times ahead.

I wanted to stay here and when Stuart [Webber] mentioned the contract, I was really interested to speak to him and get the deal sorted.

It was a difficult decision because obviously I haven’t played as many games over the past couple of years as I would have liked.

But you’ve got to bear in mind that this is a club which is striving to get to the Premier League. It’s a great club to be at so I took all of that into account and in the end, I’m very happy to sign.”

McGovern has played over 28 times in his career at Carrow Road, but has failed to make a league appearance since 2017.
