Norwich have hit the jackpot on “unsung hero” whose value’s soared by 483%

Norwich City pride themselves on discovering talented young players and providing them with a platform to fulfill their potential in Norfolk.

Max Aarons, Jamal Lewis, Todd Cantwell, James Maddison, Gabriel Sara, Borja Sainz; these are but a random selection of young players who were either signed by the first-team or came through the academy before emerging as stars for the club.

99% of clubs in world football need to make profits with player trading to continue to improve their squads and churn the wheel again and again to compete, Norwich are no different.

Even with Mark Attanasio at the helm, the Canaries are still restricted by the financial rules that govern the Championship, which means that there is always a need to sell if they want to invest heavily in the squad.

Josh Sargent’s move to Toronto earlier this year negated the need for a big sale this summer, though, and that has allowed the club to splash out a deal worth up to £9m on Andre Brooks from Sheffield United.

Ben Knapper’s Norwich recruitment strategy is paying off

Ben Knapper has made plenty of mistakes during his time as the club’s sporting director, not many would dispute that, but he deserves credit for what he did in the summer of 2024.

The Canaries, fresh off the back of David Wagner’s time at the club, had an ageing squad with little value outside of the main stars, such as Jonathan Rowe, Gabriel Sara, and Josh Sargent, which means that a change had to be made.

Knapper made the bold call to sack Wagner, appoint a youth-orientated coach in Johannes Hoff Thorup, and signed 13 players between the ages of 18 and 23 in the two windows during the 2024/25 campaign.

When signing such a high volume of young players with potential, it is only natural that some of them will not flourish as expected and could end up going down as flops.

The jury is still out on Matej Jurasek and Amankwah Forson, for example, but very few supporters would now look back and say that Knapper made a mistake by signing Jose Cordoba, Ruairi McConville, or Jacob Wright.

Some of those players signed in the summer of 2024 have taken time to flourish, as expected given their age and inexperience at the time, and Philippe Clement is now benefitting from their development.

Norwich have hit the jackpot on Danish midfielder

One of the players brought in by Knapper that summer was 18-year-old attacking midfielder Oscar Schwartau, who was valued at €1.2m (£1m) by Transfermarkt at the time of the move.

The Danish midfielder had scored six goals in 46 first-team matches for Brondby after coming through their academy set-up, but he had no prior experience of English football or the Championship.

His first year at Carrow Road was about gaining experience and adapting to the league, as he scored one goal in 43 appearances in all competitions for the Yellows.

Schwartau, who was once described as an “unsung hero” by BBC Norfolk’s Chris Reeve, took a stride forward in his development in the 2025/26 campaign, adding more end product to his game.

The 20-year-old whiz, who played on both flanks and as a number ten, scored four goals and created nine ‘big chances’ for his teammates in 34 appearances in the Championship last term, winning the club’s Young Player of the Season award.

His value has soared as a result of his progression on the pitch for Norwich. Transfermarkt currently value him at a price of €7m (£6m), which is a 483% increase on his value at the time of his move to Carrow Road.

Supporters and Clement are now hoping that he will take another step forward in his development in the upcoming season, as Norwich aim for promotion from the Championship.

If he continues to develop and improve in the coming months and seasons, Schwartau could go on to be remembered in the same way that Sara, Sainz, Maddison and others are, whilst Knapper will deserve praise for bringing him to Norfolk.
