Hanley withdraws from Scotland squad

Norwich City defender Grant Hanley has withdrawn from the Scottish national squad after their 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica.

Sky Sports News have confirmed that Hanley, along with Manchester United’s Scott McTominay and Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie have also dropped out of the squad.

Alex McLeish’s first game back in charge of the national team ended in defeat and the team were booed off at full-time.

Hanley started against Costa Rica in a back five and played a full 90 minutes, so it is unclear if an injury is behind is withdrawal.

The defender will now miss Tuesday night’s game against Hungary and will return to Norwich ahead of their trip to Queens Park Rangers next Monday.

Hanley had previously expressed his delight to return to the international set-up under McLeish.

During his time at Newcastle Hanley had struggled to hold down a place in the Scottish national team.
