The club have confirmed that the young goalkeeper, who has recently put pen to paper on a new deal will join the League One on a one-week loan with the club without a fit senior goalkeeper.
Injuries to goalkeepers, Luke McCormick and Robbert te Loeke forced Argyle into naming third choice Kyle Letheren in between the sticks during their recent away draw to Blackburn Rovers.
However, another unfortunate injury to Letheren meant that Michael Cooper, who is just 18 years of age and the club’s fourth choice goalkeeper, came off the bench against the former Premier League outfit.
Argyle, who won promotion from League Two last season have struggled this season.
Matthews spent time at Scottish side Hamilton on loan last season and will hope to continue his development in Devon, despite the short stay.
