Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber has claimed that the club fought off stiff competition to complete the signing of Marley Watkins.
The Canaries announced that Marley Watkins will join Norwich when his contract at Barnsley expires at the end of June.
Watkins has signed a three-year contract with Norwich, after failing to agree a new deal with Championship side Barnsley.
Speaking to Norwich’s website, Webber said this:
Having just been called up to the national team for the first time, it shows it’s not just us recognising his talents.
We fought off really stiff competition to bring him here so I’m delighted. He scores all types of goals and is tactically very good.
We’re really pleased to have got the deal over the line and are looking forward to working with him.
Fellow Championship side Cardiff City were also said to be very keen on a deal for Watkins.
The forward scored ten goals and registered nine assists last season, a very impressive tally for a struggling Barnsley side.
Barnsley have produced a number of impressive players in recent seasons, with Conor Hourihane, James Bree, Mason Holgate and John Stones among the big names to have left.
Watkins now joins that list as he comes to Carrow Road in the hope of earning promotion to the Premier League next season.
Norwich finished 8th in the Championship last season but, under new head coach Daniel Farke, are hopeful of improving.
