Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill, the man being closely linked with the vacant manager’s position at Norwich City, says that he has not had any contact with anyone from the Championship side.
BBC Radio Norfolk reported earlier this week that he had held talks with Norwich but speaking to BBC Sport Northern Ireland, O’Neill said that these reports were inaccurate and that he intends to stay on in his current role.
He said:
There has been no contact between myself and Norwich City. Realistically, it’s probably not what I would be looking for at this minute in time. I think the club are probably in the market for a head coach. I’m a manager. I’ve managed my country for the last five years and I intend to manage my country going forward. Any approach would have to be made through the Irish FA and it is my understanding that has not happened. [The story] is just something which has obviously come from the media in England.
O’Neill’s current contract with the Irish FA contains a release clause fee of £750,000 for Premier League clubs and it is reportedly lower for Championship sides but it appears that even if Norwich do decide to trigger it, that the 47-year-old wouldn’t be inclined to stop managing his country to move to the second-tier of English football.
