Norwich City progressed through to the next round of the EFL Cup last night with an emphatic 6-1 win over Coventry.
Norwich hammered the League One outfit, despite making 11 changes from Sunday’s draw with Ipswich in the Championship.
Kyle Lafferty opened the scoring for Norwich, firing home after Sergi Canos sent him through on goal. Canos then got himself on the scoresheet. He curled the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box for his first Norwich goal.
Coventry pulled one back from the spot just after half-time, but Russell Martin then made it 3-1 soon after from a corner. Jacob Murphy and Ben Godfrey then sealed the win with two fine goals.
There were so many superb performances last night and it has been incredibly difficult to pick out a man of the match.
I have gone for the debutante James Maddison. He was making his debut for Norwich against his former club – who he spent his entire childhood at – which was obviously a special moment for him.
However, he put in a sublime performance in the number ten role, creating chance after chance for his teammates. His set-piece delivery was exceptional and his eye for a pass was superb. Maddison bagged two assists on the night, but he could have had more if not for better finishing.
Not only was the technical side of the game very efficient, but his work-rate was very impressive. He didn’t stop chasing and closing down all match, which is sure to have caught the eye of Alex Neil. Special mentions go to Sergi Canos and Louis Thompson as well, who were excellent.
