As Norwich failed to get started, their unbeaten away record under Alex Neil came to an end. Lacklustre, lethargic, laboured. They squandered an opportunity to go fifth in an albeit embryonic Premier League, with Sky Sports providing the global stage for Norwich to falter.
Southampton, who were without a win before this encounter, profited when Steven Whittaker got himself sent off early on for two avoidable offences. Norwich’s defending was resilient for long periods, but a goal before half-time would set the wheels of disappointment in motion. Affairs would only deteriorate in the second half as Norwich succumbed to a damning 3-0 defeat. The long journey home will provide a lot to think about, most significantly: where did it all go wrong?
All the disappointment, all the frustration, all in beautiful high definition…unless you’re a Southampton fan of course.

Those are some really, really big balls at the St Mary’s.

On the volley: Dorrans was the supplier for City’s biggest chance of the game, playing the ball back across the box for Jerome who failed to convert.

A tough day for Jerome, hopelessly chasing hopeless balls.

Redmond was anonymous for large periods of the game, largely due to the necessity for him to track back with only 10 men.

“Yellow, yellow, yellow” – Perhaps the Scotsman took the chant too literally?

Whittaker’s lack of discipline would prove to be costly.

Right on time: Pelle notched Southampton’s first just before the break – widely known as the worst time to concede.

Off the mark: Pelle’s first goal for Southampton this season.

Tadic can’t bear to look at that supporter wearing a half-and-half scarf, as he celebrates Southampton’s second.

A long journey home for the travelling Canaries.

Koeman takes them higher – well, to 10th place anyway.
