Norwich City are paired with Rotherham United in the second round of the Capital One Cup. The tie will commence on the week of August 24th, with a date and time yet
to be confirmed.
The Canaries will hope for a decent cup run, something missing from recent history, as Shrewsbury Town embarrassingly dumped them out in the third round in 2014.
This will be considered by many a tough draw. Rotherham were one of only three Championship teams that were unseeded, along with MK Dons and Preston North End. The Millers were actually the highest ranked team Norwich could’ve drawn according to final league position last season.
It is also an away tie, with a second trip to the New York Stadium in five months on the cards. Norwich had two 1-1 draws against the Millers in the Championship last season, including Gary Hooper’s stunning volley. The South Yorkshire side overcame Cambridge 1-0 in the first round behind a Jordan Bowery header on the stroke of halftime.
The two sides do have some fairly recent cup history though. They met in this same round of the 2006 Carling Cup, a tie Norwich won 4-2. Moving a bit farther back, they also met in 1989. It was known as the “Littlewoods Cup” then. Norwich won 3-1 on aggregate, fueled by a 2-0 win in the away leg. Rotherham and Norwich have one final bit of cup history from 1967.
Norwich beat Rotherham 3-1 in the League cup, with the same scoreline of a 2-0 away win.
