After the Yellows opened their pre-season campaign with two blow-out victories over local opposition (7-0 and 10-0 respectively), the odds against a win for Cambridge Town were stacked even more firmly against them that they otherwise would have been. The U’s however only succumbed to what was a very respectable 3-1 loss in a match that proved a great workout for both sides, but also saw the long awaited return of Ricky ‘O lobo’ van Wolfswinkel in yellow and green.
Would the Wolf be able to make a good impression at the first available opportunity under new manager, Alex Neil?
The travelling side got off to a poor start, conceding early on with Barry Corr sliding Jordan Slew’s cross into the back of Ruddy’s net. 1-0.
It took almost a full hour for the Canaries to draw themselves level, with Gary Hooper (scorer of 12 goals from 30 shots last season) striking home a penalty awarded to Louis Thompson after he was fouled in the opposition box.
Shortly after the break, what was the unthinkable for many fans actually happened. Ricky van Wolfswinkel popped up with a debut goal on his return courtesy of a Jacob Murphy cross.
While it was far from a world beating strike, they all count and the Dutchman made up for this simplistic effort by assisting youth left back, Harry Toffolo for Norwich’s third moments later to put the away side 3-1 up and thereby completing the comeback prompting Alex Neil customary celebratory face…
