Following the release of City’s new green and yellow away strip, Italian kit-makers Errea announced on their official Twitter account that a third kit would soon be released. Those fans who saw this post were mixed in their reactions; some felt it was another money-making scheme by the club while others thought it was somewhat necessary, with the new away strip clinging on to the club’s unique yellow and green colour scheme.
However, on Thursday Errea deleted this tweet. Not because the third kit is no longer going ahead, but because the announcement of this news was premature. As one Canary Store shop-worker supposedly told City fan Jordan Burrage, ‘the third kit was supposed to be a surprise’.
Errea’s tweet was seemingly out of the blue, and failed to coincide with any tweets on the club’s official Twitter account. The news was subsequently covered by various local media outlets, including the Pink’un, with readership being in the thousands. Any surprise factor has very much been restricted as a result.
Having signed a new eight-year deal following record home shirt sales, Errea’s position in Norwich, and the minds of the fans, has increased. However on this occasion it appears they stepped out of line.
Norwich City generally put meticulous detail into their social media strategies, making the most of each and every announcement – be that transfer related or otherwise – so Errea’s unexpected tweet will likely have frustrated them greatly.
We now assume that the club will officially announce the third strip in the coming week(s), but this social media blunder may force them to bring forward any pre-planned announcement date.
