The Mirror believe Norwich City are one of several clubs to be interested in ex-Newcastle midfielder Ryan Taylor, after he was released by the club this summer. In fact, along with ex-City winger Jonas Gutierrez, Taylor was released over the phone by manager John Carver – a move which has since been vilified by the press. While you must feel sympathy for the player, you’ve also got to believe that there was some thought behind what appeared to be a clumsy action by the head coach.
His release must surely be a reflection of his ability. Is Ryan Taylor any good? Would he add anything to the Norwich City side? Having already signed one player on a free contract, Youssouf Mulumbu, I would argue no. We could also do with not having another sick note a la Anthony Pilkington/Ryan Bennett.
He’s been at the club for six years, making 96 appearances for Newcastle during that time. His goals have come at a premium, as you would expect from a defensive midfielder, but when they have come they’ve generally been something special. He secured his place in Geordie folklore when he scored a superb free-kick in the Tyne-Wear derby vs Sunderland to win the game in the last minute. Perhaps his most memorable moment was an incredible strike vs Everton. A looping half volley which sailed into the top corner of Tim Howard’s net.
Norwich have only been linked with the midfielder, and other clubs such as Nottingham Forest and QPR appear to be leading the chase (which may be testament to his quality). At the age of 30, I do not believe he is what City need, and I don’t suspect there is much substance to this rumour whatsoever. He would however add years of Premier League experience to the squad, and being a free agent, that comes without the burden/risk of a transfer fee.
