The club have confirmed that Norwich academy product, Cameron McGeehan, will be joining Luton Town for a six-figure fee.
The midfielder enjoyed a spell at the Hatters during Norwich’s Championship promotion season; since securing Premier League status it’s been decided he isn’t needed. However, our understanding is that he was planning to leave anyway, with the likelihood of first team football at Luton being far greater than at Norwich.
Cameron McGeehan was instrumental in Norwich City’s FA Youth Cup victory in 2012/13. In fact, as captain, he was the man who drove the team all the way to the final, beating Chelsea (whose academy cost substantially more) and ended up lifting the trophy in front of thousands of away fans at Stamford Bridge. In the first leg of the final, Cameron McGeehan was given the perfect opportunity to announce himself as a Norwich City player when Josh Murphy went down in the box, with just minutes left on the clock. Step up Cameron McGeehan. The Northern Ireland U21 ripped the net off as he smashed the ball straight down the middle. Jubilation, passion, euphoria.
His first loan spell with Luton came in 2014 and again he played a crucial role. Making 18 appearances, scoring 3 goals, McGeehan quickly won Hatters fans over. His loan was extended until the end of the season and he played an important role as Luton secured promotion to League Two. McGeehan even picked up the Conference Premier player of the month award in April, putting in crucial performances during Luton’s run-in.
In January 2015, Cambridge United came in and took McGeehan on a one-month loan and on his debut the midfielder scored twice, earning the man of the match award. He played in an impressive 0-0 draw to Manchester United in the FA Cup, however they inevitably lost the second leg at Old Trafford.
Once his loan spell was up with Cambridge, he rejoined Luton on loan once more and scored three in fifteen appearances. The Hatters have since continued their interest and secured the midfielder for what is thought to be a six-figure transfer fee.
Many believed he had potential, having shown those key leadership qualities at both U21 and senior level, but the inability to offer him first team football has allowed Luton to coaxed him away. After all, as a young player there’s nothing worse than not getting game time.
