Late Defeat Exposes Defensive Flaws After Dramatic Boro Clash

Norwich City extended their barren run without a clean sheet to 15 matches after suffering a dramatic 4-3 Championship defeat at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Substitutes Jacob Wright and Jovon Makama helped overturn a two-goal deficit during a spirited second half. This fightback was eventually undone by an Ashley Phillips strike in stoppage time.

Mo Toure had earlier given the visitors a first-minute lead at the Riverside Stadium. Costly errors from Jose Cordoba and Ruairi McConville quickly erased that early advantage.

Midfield Isolation Leaves Backline Vulnerable

A high-pressing approach from the hosts overwhelmed Kenny McLean and Pelle Mattsson. The midfield duo struggled to provide adequate cover for a fractured defensive unit.

Manager Philippe Clement must urgently address these persistent structural gaps. His side showed impressive attacking resilience but remain hindered by familiar defensive blindspots against testing opposition.

The head coach previously rotated his Championship squad to maintain fresh legs. That strategy initially masked the underlying frailties fully exposed on Teesside.

Clement insists his team requires a versatile tactical approach to sustain their promotion push. “You need to have different layers,” Clement told The Pink Un. “I explained it to the team also like that. You cannot have one playing style offensively, defensively, and then have the ambitions that this club has.”

Norwich travel to face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Thursday evening.
