Former Norwich City defender Stevie Smith has returned to Rangers to join the Under-19 coaching setup following a major restructure of the club’s academy system.
The 37-year-old will work alongside head coach Malky Thomson as the Glasgow side pivots away from B-team football. Rangers dismantled their reserve squad in early 2025 to prioritise competitive European exposure for their emerging youth group.
Focus Shifts To European Competition
The Under-19 squad secured their domestic league title last season, earning qualification for the UEFA Youth League. They will face Dynamo Kyiv in a two-legged tie this autumn, beginning with an away fixture on October 28. A potential clash against either AZ Alkmaar or Goztepe awaits the winner.
The restructure aims to accelerate the development of academy prospects. Talents like Ryddn McGuire and Ashton Scally are already viewed as potential first-team options for manager Philippe Clement. Meanwhile, Kyle Glasgow is gaining senior experience on loan at Alloa.
Familiar Face In The Dugout
The former left-back spent eight years at Ibrox before moving to Carrow Road. He later returned for a second playing stint between 2013 and 2015. His coaching journey includes roles within the academy from 2021 to 2025.
He also stepped in as interim manager for a 2-2 draw with Dundee United last season following the departure of Russell Martin. His immediate focus will now be preparing the young squad for their upcoming European campaign.
