Norwich City’s reported interest in George Bello underlines one of the clearer priorities in Philippe Clement’s summer rebuild.
The Canaries have been linked with the LASK left-back as Clement and Ben Knapper look to strengthen a position that caused problems last season.
The72 reported before the window opened that Bello was on Norwich’s list of transfer targets. The 24-year-old has also been linked with other Championship clubs, which reflects the demand for athletic left-backs in this market.
Norwich do not just need cover on that side.
They need a left-back who can help Clement play higher up the pitch, recover quickly in transition and give the team more width over a 46-game Championship season.
Why Bello Fits The Norwich Brief
Bello is not an academy gamble.
He has played in Germany with Arminia Bielefeld, established himself in Austria with LASK and has senior United States caps behind him.
When LASK signed him in 2023, SBI Soccer reported that he arrived after making 31 appearances across the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga with Arminia.
His attacking output has also improved in Austria. SBI Soccer reported in January that Bello had produced one goal and three assists from 17 appearances this season.
That profile is easy to understand from a Norwich perspective.
Clement needs a left-back who can run beyond the winger, handle possession under pressure and still get back into the defensive line. Bello’s pace and experience make him a natural name to consider.
Read Norwich has already covered how Cheikh Niasse’s transfer twist kept the club’s left-back question open, and the Bello link belongs in the same part of the squad-building plan.
This is about balance, not just numbers.
Can Norwich Make The Deal Work?
The contract situation makes any move more complicated.
Bello initially joined LASK on a deal until 2026, but the Austrian club have since confirmed his contract has been extended until summer 2027.
That weakens the chance of a cheap deal.
Norwich would have to decide whether Bello is worth a proper fee at a time when Clement still needs work in several areas of the squad.
There is a clear case for the player. He is 24, left-footed, quick, experienced abroad and close to his prime years. That is different from signing a younger player who may need two seasons before becoming reliable.
There also has to be a limit.
Norwich cannot afford to add expensive squad clutter while trying to build a cleaner promotion group. Knapper’s job is to find the right profile without letting the price run away from the plan.
Read Norwich has also looked at how the club must keep their defensive list moving after Luke Graham’s Stoke City development. The same applies here.
Bello makes sense as a target. Norwich still need alternatives if the deal becomes too expensive.
Clement needs a left-back who can help his football work beyond Carrow Road. Bello’s profile explains the search clearly enough. The next question is whether Norwich can make the numbers work.
