- Ben Knapper and Philippe Clement navigate a crucial summer transfer window.
- Norwich City’s historic success is built on some transfer window masterclasses.
- Legendary bargains laid the vital foundations for historic promotion campaigns.
As Philippe Clement and Ben Knapper navigate a critical summer transfer window, the pressure is on to deliver some key new faces that will lead to a sustained promotion push.
Unearthing gems without paying a premium is notoriously difficult, but our club’s history is packed with greats who have arrived with little fanfare (and/or cost) but who delivered in yellow and green in unimaginable ways.
So, let’s take a look back at the finest business ever done in Norfolk. Here are my top 10 best signings in Norwich City history, ranked by value, impact, and legacy.
Top 10 best Canary signings:
10. James Maddison
Signed from Coventry City (2016) | Fee: £2.5m
A masterclass in scouting. Maddison was signed as a teenager, nurtured, and eventually unleashed during the 2017/18 season, scoring 14 goals. His dazzling creative flair not only illuminated Carrow Road but yielded a massive profit when he departed for Leicester City for a then-record £20m fee.
9. Russell Martin
Signed from Peterborough United (2010) | Fee: ~£250k
Initially arriving on loan before completing a cut-price permanent move, “The Norfolk Cafu” became the Steady Eddie right-back of the iconic Paul Lambert era. Martin made over 300 appearances, captained the club, and achieved three separate promotions to the Premier League.
8. Kevin Keelan
Signed from Wrexham (1963) | Fee: £6,500
No list of historic signings is complete without the ultimate bargain. Keelan arrived at Carrow Road in the early 1960s and went on to claim the club’s all-time appearance record with a staggering 673 first-team games. A fearless goalkeeper who had the agility of a cat.
7. Grant Holt
Signed from Shrewsbury Town (2009) | Fee: £400k
When Norwich plummeted into the depths of League One, Paul Lambert turned to a bruising, unheralded striker from Shrewsbury. What followed was Canary folklore. Holty smashed 78 goals across three consecutive Player of the Season campaigns, spearheading the charge straight back into the top flight.
6. Tim Krul
Signed from Brighton (2018) | Fee: Free Transfer
Brought in by Daniel Farke to provide much-needed authority in goal, the veteran Dutchman became a dressing-room leader. He kept 13 clean sheets during the 2018/19 title-winning season, won Player of the Year in the top flight, and embodied the spirit of the club in the Farke era.
5. Iwan Roberts
Signed from Wolves (1997) | Fee: £850k
Our favourite toothless target man became a legend in Norfolk, and still is. While it took time for him to win over the fans, Iwan eventually scored 96 goals for the club, famously scoring in the 2002 Play-off Final and leading the team that won promotion to the Premier League in 2004. Oh yeah… and he scored a double against you-know-who.
4. Emi Buendia
Signed from Getafe (2018) | Fee: £1.5m
Found playing in the Spanish second tier, Buendia turned out to be arguably the most naturally gifted player to ever wear yellow and green. His telepathic relationship with Teemu Pukki ripped the Championship apart twice, culminating in an EFL Player of the Season award and a £33m move to Aston Villa.
3. Duncan Forbes
Signed from Colchester United (1968) | Fee: £10,000
A colossal, tough-tackling centre-back whose booming voice could be heard across Carrow Road. Forbes was the spiritual heart of the Norwich team that won promotion to the First Division for the very first time in 1972, serving the club for decades as a player and later as an employee. A Lionheart if ever there was one.
2. Darren Huckerby
Signed from Manchester City (2004) | Fee: £750k
Huck’s arrival transformed the club. Initially, a loan signing, the hierarchy moved heaven and earth to make his deal permanent for £750k. His explosive pace and directness guaranteed the 2003/04 Division One title, cementing his status as a modern-day Carrow Road legend.
1. Teemu Pukki
Signed from Brondby (2018) | Fee: Free Transfer
To get a player who scores 88 goals in 210 appearances is incredible; to get him for absolutely nothing was the greatest bit of business in Norwich City history. The Finnish striker was the spearhead of two modern title wins and proved his elite pedigree by scoring 11 Premier League goals in a struggling side. The best free transfer of all time.
Legacy metric: While modern eras boast massive financial gains like with Maddison and Buendia, the standard for a Norwich signing can be measured by how much they left out on the pitch. Strikers like Pukki and Holt cost less than £500,000 combined, yet yielded 166 goals between them.
