As the 2026 summer transfer window opens, speculation is mounting over who Ben Knapper and Philippe Clement will bring to Carrow Road. But while fans obsess over stats, the incoming players face a different challenge: learning what it truly means to wear the yellow and green. Here is our survival guide for new Norwich City players…

Be happy to be here

It doesn’t take a lot to get people on side. For some English may not be your first language. If you show willingness and positivity that will often go a long way.

Don’t go overboard

You don’t have to tell us that Norwich City was your dream since you were a kid. Nor do you have to tell us you are an unstoppable attacking dynamo (especially if you play in central defence).

Most players find that fans are generally very welcoming and if you put the effort in you will usually get the love back.

Get to know the area

Onel Hernandez practically made himself a cult favourite for life when he regaled people with his love of Argos and the joy of playing on the penny machines in the arcade.

Going to local restaurants, taking the sights of the city and finding your feet in the local area will make the stay better.

Avoid the stereotypes

Yes we get it, it rains more in the UK than other places. Relatively, East Anglia has one of the lowest levels of rainfall in the country so as a Norwich City player you are luckier than a lot of folks (even the deep pockets of Manchester City can’t make the weather better!)

Naturally, there are the predictable jabs at local food. That being said, I have seen plenty of videos of Americans extolling the virtues of our local cuisine. It’s like anywhere, if you know where to look, there are plenty of decent places to go.

Don’t kiss the badge

You can kiss the badge when you truly believe you are Norwich City player. Likewise, if you’re taking a corner, you can only gesture with your arms to get the crowd yelling if you’re someone like Kenny McLean.

Have some dignity

Inevitably, at some point, it will be time to leave Norwich City. Sometimes it will be for a better club, sometimes it will be that your contract doesn’t get renewed.

Believe it or not, there are ways and means to leave the club with dignity.

It’s pretty safe to say that taking the Josh Sargent route and texting the head coach before a game to say you can’t make it is pretty high on the list. Also, if you are sold to a rival club, maybe don’t swear and rant; it’s a bit tacky.

Not every Norwich City player will become a club legend or a cult favourite. But if you are willing to do your part then you can still be a player that the community will have a soft spot for.
