  • Norwich City are known for bringing through young players.
  • The Canaries added an exciting talent to their academy earlier this year.
  • There is a future Norwich star who most fans may have never heard of.

Norwich City are well known for how many young players they have nurtured and developed over the years, in both the Premier League and the Championship.

Max Aarons, Ben Godfrey, Todd Cantwell, James Maddison, Andrew Omobamidele, Josh and Jacob Murphy, and that is just to name a few of the many.

In the current squad, Kellen Fisher, Oscar Schwartau, Jacob Wright, Ruairi McConville, and Liam Gibbs all joined as teenager and have developed into first-team regulars.

Creating a pipeline

Creating a pipeline of young players to come into the first-team is not easy and it has evolved over the years.

Rather than relying on finding the best talents in the local area, clubs can go and poach teenage talents away from clubs across the world.

For example, Norwich brought Idah and Omobamidele over to the club as teenagers from Ireland before developing them at U18 and U21 level and then turning them into first-team stars.

Or they can do what they did with Aarons. They signed him as a 16-year-old after he left Luton Town, and he spent several years in the academy before emerging as a key player for Daniel Farke.

Creating a pipeline, though, is not just about acquiring talent. You also have to create an environment, both in the academy and in the first-team, that supports that development of young players.

It is pointless to have an academy set-up with brilliant players and brilliant facilities if the first-team manager has no interest in bringing through young players, for example.

Norwich have all the right conditions to bring through stars at the moment because they have the facilities, they have the talent, and they have a manager in Philippe Clement who has shown faith in young talent.

Norwich’s latest academy signing

A lot of Norwich supporters may have missed the club’s latest academy signing because he was announced two weeks after the January transfer window slammed shut.

Fans may have been more focused on the ongoing fight in the Championship at the time when the club’s academy account confirmed the signing of centre-back Vinnie Leonard from Dundalk.

The Irish youngster will officially link-up with the U21s in the summer for pre-season, as he turned 18 and became eligible to make the move in March.

Norwich reportedly beat Brighton, Crystal Palace, and Celtic to secure the young defender’s signature, which suggests that they pulled off a coup.

Everyone know how brilliant Brighton’s recruitment has been under Tony Bloom. ReadNorwich even shared the story of how they signed and developed Diego Gomez after the Canaries missed out on the chance to sign him.

A future Norwich City star

Whilst some fans may have never heard of Leonard, possibly until reading this article, the 18-year-old talent could be a future star for the club.

Despite only turning 18 in March, the centre-back has already racked up 43 first-team appearances for Dundalk, scoring three goals.

Leonard played a pivotal role in their promotion from the First Division in Ireland in the 2025 campaign, helping the side to keep 13 clean sheets in 34 appearances.

The 18-year-old centre-back also made a strong start to the Premier Division campaign in 2026, winning 68% of his duels and 85% of his aerial duels in three appearances.

However, he has been out with a virus in his leg since February and only recently returned to training and is now working to get back to his best ahead of pre-season in Norfolk.

Despite his age and relative inexperience, Leonard has shown that he can bully and dominate first-team forwards in duels, which suggests that he could develop into a monstrous defender for Norwich.

If he can adapt to English football and to the Championship, the Ireland youth international could end up being a future star for Clement, competing with the likes of McConville and Jose Cordoba for a place in the side.

You may not be too familiar with him yet, but Leonard has the makings of being a star for Norwich some day…
