Why every team needs a Liam Gibbs

  • Gibbs scored his first Norwich City goal in three years against Derby.
  • He has played in a variety of positions under Philippe Clement
  • His effort and selflessness have set a real example within City’s squad

Liam Gibbs scored his first Norwich City goal in three years, and his first at Carrow Road, in last night’s 2-1 win over Derby County, and has very much become ‘Mr Versatile’ since the arrival of head coach Philippe Clement in November.

And that versatility has made Gibbs so valuable. Over the course of this season, he has featured at right midfield, attacking midfield, defensive midfield, left midfield, right back, and left back.

That level of adaptability is rare. Managers constantly face injuries, suspensions, and tactical shifts, and having a player who can slot into multiple roles provides a huge competitive advantage. Instead of reshaping an entire system, a coach can rely on someone like Gibbs to maintain balance.

Epitome of professionalism

However, versatility alone is not enough. Many players can fill in across positions, but few do so with the same level of commitment and consistency. What makes Gibbs stand out is his work ethic. Regardless of where he is deployed, he approaches each role with intensity, discipline, and a clear understanding of his responsibilities.

Whether tracking back as a full-back or supporting attacks from midfield, he applies himself fully to the task at hand.

Equally important is his attitude. In a sport where players can become frustrated when played out of position, Gibbs sets a strong example. He does not complain, sulk, or allow his performance to drop. Instead, he embraces the challenge.

Complete footballer

This professionalism not only has earned Clement’s trust but has also set the tone within the squad. Younger players, in particular, can look at Gibbs and understand the importance of putting the team first.

There is also a tactical intelligence behind his flexibility. Playing in multiple positions requires more than physical effort – it demands awareness and quick decision-making.

Gibbs demonstrates an ability to read the game from different perspectives, which enhances his overall contribution. His understanding of both defensive and attacking duties makes him a more complete footballer.

Football is now so heavily dominated by specialist roles, and Gibbs has shown the value of a player who is more of an all-rounder. He may not always be the focal point, but his effort cannot go unnoticed.

Every successful team needs balance, reliability, and selflessness – and that is exactly what Gibbs brings to this Norwich City team.
