- Clement demands more set-piece goals despite the clinical win over Bristol.
- Cordoba header proves vital as Norwich City target the Championship top six.
- Clement returns to Carrow Road touchline for tonight’s clash against Derby.
Norwich City head coach Philippe Clement revealed in his post-match press conference of the Canaries’ 4-2 win at Ashton Gate that he wants more goals from set-pieces for the remainder of the Championship season.
Jose Cordoba’s header off a Kenny McLean freekick sealed the points against Bristol City, but Clement said that his side has been lacking in quality when it comes to their set pieces.
Norwich City host playoff-chasing Derby County at Carrow Road tonight as they look to keep their sliver of hope for a top six finish in the Championship alive.
“I want to challenge them. Of course, you cannot challenge them in everything. That was one of the challenges for the Bristol game that I expected,” said the Belgian, who will be back on the touchline after serving his one-game ban for failing to control his staff in the East Anglian Derby.
“Lost players with good delivery”
“We felt it would be a tight game and really difficult to create open opportunities against them.
“So we wanted to give extra focus on these set pieces, in the delivery, in the runs, and in the finishing and the team did really well, obviously.
“Since I came here we have been not good enough, for the moment. I think the club lost last year players with really good delivery.
“We need to make players better and we’re working hard on that, because before every game we work on the set pieces. I have to say, in the first months together, more than in this last part, we were better.
“We’re looking into all those things, the delivery needs to be better, for sure, but also in the runs, in the timings in the blocks, and this is also one of the hardest leagues to score on set pieces, because it’s almost a rugby game sometimes.”
Of the Canaries’ 59 goals in the Championship this season, 14 have come from set pieces, accounting for 24%. Although that may seem low, it is actually a higher number of set-piece goals than they managed last season.
Norwich City managed just 11 goals from set pieces in their 46 games, scoring 71 in total – a 15% contribution – but in terms of where they rank compared to other teams in the division this season, it doesn’t make for the best reading. If the Belgian can add another dimension of goalscoring to his side, then they will become an even bigger threat than what they already look since his arrival in November.
