- Radio Norfolk captures matchday excitement, but editorial choice frustrated fans.
- Switching coverage mid-game risks missing crucial moments during key matches.
- Local radio must balance multi-club representation without interrupting main feature.
Before I begin, I want to say I love listening to Radio Norfolk.
While being at the game is the best and I love watching highlights, radio is a great medium when it comes to capturing excitement.
Spontaneous
Being spontaneous can be part of the charm with Radio Norfolk.
I remember when Roy Waller (RIP) would go off on one and then realise, “Oh it’s a goal!”
There was also the time we were listening to the channel late at night and heard the DJ realising he had dropped the CD he was about to play.
King’s Lynn
Another thing I should clarify before we go further is that this is not a slight on the good people of the King’s Lynn football team or their supporters.
That being said, this does have to do with the moments where Radio Norfolk, “Goes to The Walks”.
A crucial moment
I was listening to the game, hyped up as Norwich had just gone 4-1 up at Bristol City.
It was at this point that someone at Radio Norfolk decided now was a good time to switch to the crucial game at King’s Lynn.
After this report, we were then informed that Bristol City had got a second goal in the end.
Why this matters…
In the interest of balance you could say Radio Norfolk made an editorial choice.
The game was effectively won and they wanted to give representation to a lower league team.
This is commendable. I know people who are lower league and non-league supporters.
I would counter this by saying when I switch on the radio to listen to Norwich City v Bristol City this is what I expect to listen to.
Yes it didn’t matter in the end.
But imagine if the goal they had missed had been the equaliser or winner for Norwich City.
Make a better choice
As stated before this is not intended as a complaint against Radio Norfolk, I enjoy listening to their coverage.
I also want King’s Lynn and The Walks to get representation.
There is the risk with BBC cuts we could lose this and I really don’t want their fans to miss out.
But I would also implore whoever makes decisions out there to consider who is listening to Radio Norfolk and just make a better choice next time.
And yes, you can quote me on that.
