Ali Ahmed: The numbers behind a signing of the season contender

  • Ali Ahmed joined Norwich in January and has made an immediate impact.
  • He has provided six goal contributions in his first 11 Championship games.
  • Cost City £1.4 million, and they are likely to sell him for significantly more.

When Norwich City completed the £1.4 million signing of Ali Ahmed from Vancouver Whitecaps, the move initially flew under the radar.

Compared with some of the headline-grabbing January transfers in the Championship, such as Anis Mehmeti swapping Bristol City for Ipswich Town, Ahmed’s arrival looked like an addition of depth rather than one that would take the league by storm.

However, just two months after his arrival, the Canadian international is rapidly proving that he may not just be one of the bargains of the campaign, but one of the signings of the season

Huge influence in NR1

The numbers don’t lie either. In just 11 league appearances, he has contributed 4 goals and 2 assists. For a player adapting to a new league, new teammates, and a different style of play, that level of output is remarkable. It means he is directly contributing to a goal almost every game, which is an excellent return for any player at any level.

Beyond goals and assists, Ahmed’s underlying metrics highlight just how influential he has been since arriving in NR1. He ranks in the top 11% of attacking midfielders and wingers for chances created, demonstrating his ability to unlock defences and provide service for teammates.

Equally notable is his involvement in Norwich’s attacking play. Ahmed sits in the top 10% for touches per 90 among players in his position, showing how frequently he gets on the ball and drives the team forward.

Rather than being the type of attacking player who waits for moments to strike, he actively spearheads the Canaries possession and tempo.

Exceptional business by Knapper!

His performances are also reflected in his average match rating of 7.38 (per FotMob), a strong indicator of consistency rather than occasional flashes of brilliance. Consistency is often the defining trait that separates promising signings from genuinely outstanding ones, and ask any Norwich fan, and they will tell you that Ahmed is exactly that.

What makes the signing of Ahmed even more impressive is the price Norwich paid for him. In an era where even Championship clubs are beginning to spend millions on attacking talent, securing a player performing at this level for just £1.4 million is truly exceptional business from Ben Knapper.

If he continues at this pace, Norwich could be looking at making a hefty profit if Ahmed is to depart any time soon.

In this revival under Philippe Clement, Ahmed is not just a useful squad player or a promising project. He is a key creative force and a reliable contributor in the final third.

Considering his performances, influence, and bargain price tag, it is becoming increasingly clear that Norwich may have pulled off one of the signings of the season.
