Drinkwater wages a stumbling block – should Norwich end their interest?

Danny Drinkwater’s wages at Chelsea are proving to be a stumbling block in any potential exit from the top-six club this week.

According to The Evening Standard, Norwich and Brighton are both interested in Drinkwater, but are unwilling to pay his £100k-per-week wages.

The report claims that Chelsea are now considering the possibility of paying a percentage of his wages to send him out on loan before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

With Drinkwater’s gargantuan wages proving to be an issue in any deal for the midfielder, should Norwich end their interest?

Yes. It has been well-documented, by Stuart Webber, that Norwich have the smallest transfer budget in the Premier League this season.

The club should not risk their financial security to secure a loan for a midfielder who has started just five Premier League games in the last two seasons and played once in all competitions for Chelsea last term.

Norwich should leave Brighton to thrash out a deal with Chelsea and move on to other targets, although they may have already found an alternative.

Estadio Deportivo claim that Norwich are set to sign Ibrahim Amadou on loan from Sevilla, with an option to sign him permanently for €9.5m at the end of the campaign.

This means that Norwich can afford to drop their interest in Drinkwater, assuming Amadou successfully completes his switch to Carrow Road in the coming days.
