Arguably the biggest of Norwich’s promotion rivals will lock horns with the Canaries on Wednesday night in a live-aired Championship crunch-match.
Alex Neil’s men will make the 250-mile journey to St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United looking for three huge points to reclaim top spot from the high-flying Huddersfield Town, who have a game in hand.
Norwich, who have won their last five games in all competitions, including a hard-fought 3-1 win over Burton last time out, are really beginning to bleep the automatic promotion radar.
The Magpies have picked up the pace recently too, in only their second Championship season since the formation of the Premier League.
Six wins out of their last eight games suggests Newcastle have got momentum as well, despite Aston Villa snatching a late draw and Wolves triumphing 0-2 over the Geordies in their last two matches.
Despite what the form suggests, the Canaries have not been playing at their best in recent games but can they up their game for this huge away tie and get another result?
These five key battles on the pitch will be crucial for the Yell’Army to triumph:
Martin Olsson vs Matt Ritchie
Olsson has far been solid at left-back thus far. Although his pace and strength normally make him a constant attacking outlet for the Canaries, the Swede will have his work cut out defensively against Scotland international Matt Ritchie.
Jonny Howson vs Mo Diame
Howson has been nothing but one thing this season: consistent.
However, Mo Diame is a powerful unit in the Geordie midfield, and it will likely take some doubling up between Howson and Graham Dorrans to keep the Senegalese star quiet.
Robbie Brady vs Jesus Gamez
Definitely a battle to keep an eye on!
Spaniard Jesus Gamez has only made one solitary appearance for Newcastle this season, but will be called up to action today since preferred right-backs DeAndre Yedlin and Vernon Anita are both injured.
Brady missed a penalty last week against Burton, so the Irishman will be eager to get on the scoresheet.
Cameron Jerome vs Ciaran Clark
Bringing his teammates into attacking play may be Jerome’s trade, but if he wants to add to his tally of three goals against the Magpies, then he must be up for the physical battle against Irish international Ciaran Clark.
Jacob Murphy vs Paul Dummett
Twin one has undoubtedly been Norwich’s most attacking threat as of late, with five goals in his debut season.
Paul Dummett is solid, but the Canary faithful will be hoping for a special performance again from Jacob, since this could turn out to be Norwich’s most rewarding battle if they manage to win it.
