Norwich contemplating surprise bid for in-demand Serie B striker

Norwich are interested in 24-year-old Cesena striker Gregoire Defrel, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport. The Frenchman scored 9 goals last season, as his side drifted helplessly into relegation obscurity and now the Canaries are joining a large list of teams vying for his signature.

Palermo, Bologna and Sassuolo have all apparently had bids in the region of £5 million pounds accepted, but Defrel has not yet been convinced. St. Etienne, who have also shown interest, may have an easier task in persuading the player to return to his home nation.

Earlier this year, the Daily Mail reported that Southampton and Everton were also keeping tabs on Defrel, and either side could yet place a bid. He played in four different positions last season, and this versatility could prove favourable for Premier League sides, especially Norwich, as they look ahead to a long and gruelling season ahead.

While mainly utilised as a striker or winger, his defensive contributions are admirable and he even played as a defensive midfielder last season. The wanted man is also known for his dribbling, and has 14 assists to his name in the 110 games he’s played for Cesena.

However, we certainly don’t have a lack of strikers and the reports of our interest may indeed be completely out of the blue. If we do offload one of Wolfswinkel, Hooper, Jerome or Grabban, Defrel may well be an option, but it certainly looks unlikely at this time.
