Norwich City’s recruitment last summer played a pivotal part in their title-winning Championship campaign.
The Canaries’ strategies in the transfer market have propelled the club to unimaginable heights, as the signings of misfits from European outfits and bargain buys have led the club back to the Premier League.
The club’s fellow Championship sides spent hefty sums, but shrewd recruitment and meticulous scouting aided Daniel Farke and his men in their meteoric rise up the table.
Norwich topped the division with 94 points to their name, beating Sheffield United to the title following a 2-1 victory away at Aston Villa.
The club are likely to be working with a limited transfer budget as they begin to prepare for life back in the top flight of English football, and exceptional recruitment will once again be necessary for the club.
So, take a look at how we graded Norwich’s signings from last summer’s transfer window!
Emi Buendia - A*
Buendia arrived for just £1.5 million from Cultural Leonesa and was one of the Championship’s best players throughout his maiden campaign. His creativity and tenacity have been crucial to Norwich’s style of play.
Moritz Leitner - B+
Leitner signed for Norwich permanently after spending a season on loan at Carrow Road. Although he hasn’t been as influential as he was in the previous campaign, he has delivered composure, efficiency and a touch of class to the Canaries’ midfield, and he played his part in a memorable season.
Ben Marshall - D
Marshall’s arrival at Norwich was met with excitement, but he simply failed to produce when he was given the chances to shine. His struggles saw him loaned to Millwall for the second half of the campaign, and this acquisition goes down as one of the less successful ones…
Teemu Pukki - A*
This grade was pretty obvious. Pukki has been outstanding for Norwich following his arrival on a free transfer after his release from Brondby. He finished the season as the Championship’s top goalscorer, and the Canaries fans have a striker who they can depend on as they head into the Premier League.
Tim Krul - B
Krul had a season full of ups and downs. Another free signing, the Dutchman made his fair share of mistakes along the way as Norwich secured promotion, but his distribution and experience did prove to be important. He’ll need to improve if he is to remain as the club’s number one in the top flight.
Felix Passlack - D
Passlack arrived on a season-long loan from Borussia Dortmund to compete with Norwich’s exciting young full-backs, but he failed to do so. He struggled to break into the first-team picture and offered precious little in the club’s promotion.
Jordan Rhodes - C
Rhodes arrived from Sheffield Wednesday on loan but found himself behind Pukki in the pecking order under Farke. He chipped in with important goals — six in total — but didn’t quite recapture the form from his earlier years. Nevertheless, he provided Norwich with a solid enough backup option.
