Reports from Spain have surfaced this morning claiming that Norwich are “just steps” away from signing Celta de Vigo forward Joaquin Larrivey.
The Spanish website SPORT.es, as well as other local papers, claim the two clubs have already reached an agreement for the player just over €2. It’s widely reported that the striker hasn’t travelled today to a training camp with his club, opting for England to finalise a deal instead. The rumour has been given further credibility as Ed Malyon, Deputy Sports Editor at The Mirror, confirmed City’s interest in the striker.
Since a long spell at Italian side Cagliari, Larrivey has been a journeyman. He’s been at five different clubs in the last five years. Since signing for Celta Vigo in 2014, he’s scored 11 goals in 35 appearances—a mediocre return for a club hovering just above mid-table.
If he signs, it seems unlikely he would be our main striker. But if the likes of van Wolfswinkel or Hooper do leave the club, they will need replacing. And at roughly £1.5m, you’re probably not going to be getting a 15 goals-a-season striker. The move would definitely be a surprise to most. After Norwich CEO David McNally clearly stated we’d target British based players, signing a man who’s wondered around the European leagues without making much impact doesn’t seem to make sense.
