Norwich take on Everton in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night. Ahead of this, we’ve spoken to Read Everton’s Alex Bennett to get the lowdown on Norwich’s opponents.
Who should Norwich be wary of?
I think Kevin Mirallas has to show up this season. It’s a crunch time in his season, after putting in decent shifts but not hitting the heights or being the superstar we all know he is. Other than that, There’s obviously Idrissa Gueye who is by far the best signing of the summer. I would say watch out for him, but there’s nothing that can stop him.
Which Norwich player do you fear the most?
I haven’t watched Norwich this season, but I’ve always been a fan of Hoolahan, he’s a tricky player and a good eye for goal. There’s obviously Naismith who we all know well, but I’ve heard he’s not been too special for Norwich? He’s by far my favourite player, for what he did at Everton. 14/15 player of the Season for us
What do you think about Everton’s transfer business in the summer?
I think our transfer business was very smart. We brought in Stekelenburg who we all expected to be third choice, but he’s cemented a place every game now. He’s superb. Idrissa Gueye has probably been the best player in the League this season, fully biased, obviously. Yannick Bolasie is just so, so exciting to watch and he’s dangerous with Rom up front. There’s Williams as well, who provides so much security to Jags and our Defence as a whole. I think Deadline Day was a disappointment, we never got that big-name star player, but we never really needed him. Koeman was the big-name.
How has new manager Ronald Koeman performed so far?
Koeman has been a revelation. He’s transformed the club from top-to-bottom with all new backroom staff coming in and shipping out the deadwood. He’s changed training, and he actually knows how to organise a defence, which is lovely. There are no limits to what we can be. Koeman has been a revelation. Are Everton taking the EFL Cup seriously?
I think Koeman is taking all the cups seriously. At Goodison, we’re all just desperate for a Cup it’s beyond belief. There’s nothing like silverware, no matter what crap the media feeds us about ‘Top 6’. Tangible silverware is amazing. I haven’t ever had that taste, I was born 4 years after our last trophy. Says a lot that, eh?
Do Everton fans want a cup run?
Like I said, we most certainly want a Cup Run. We’re doing well in the league, which is great, but a trip to Wembley is incomparable. We went last season, but I think most of us went with low expectations as that was coming towards the end of Martinez when we were absolutely atrocious. We’re positive, now.
I don’t know, really. Koeman still mystifies a bit with his selection. I’ll go with a strong team, definitely. Little change to the M’boro game:
Stekelenburg — Baines – Mori – Jagielka – Holgate – Gueye – Davies – Deulofeu – Barkley – Mirallas – Valencia.
Score prediction, I’ll go 2-0 Everton. Comfortable this time, we don’t need pens again!
Thanks very much to Alex for taking the time to talk to us.
