# Jacob Wright Stakes Claim for Midfield Role After Riverside Cameo

Norwich City midfielder Wright delivered a transformative second-half performance to stake his claim for the primary playmaker role during a dramatic 4-3 defeat at Middlesbrough.

The 20-year-old former Manchester City product replaced Anis Ben Slimane at half-time. His midfield counterpart had struggled to influence a frantic opening period on Saturday afternoon.

The substitute immediately dictated the tempo at the Riverside Stadium to spark an impressive comeback. He provided a perfectly weighted assist for Jovon Makama, slotting a slick through ball to bypass the host defence.

Just five minutes later, Wright swept home a loose ball inside the penalty area. That crucial strike secured his first senior goal and levelled the thrilling contest.

## Clement Faces Midfield Selection Dilemma

His dynamic drive sharply contrasted with Slimane’s subdued first-half display. This commanding cameo presents manager Philippe Clement with a clear tactical decision regarding his preferred creative option.

Clement praised the versatility of his squad following the final whistle. The manager told [The Pink Un](https://www.pinkun.com/sport/norwich-city/26405505.middlesbrough-4-3-norwich-city-davitt-championship-pointers): “You need to have the different layers in your team to play different kind of games and to face everything that you can face in football.”

Ashley Phillips eventually struck a stoppage-time winner to deny the visitors. That late collapse served to highlight the [unresolved defensive flaws](https://readnorwich.com/2026/09/13/late-defeat-exposes-defensive-flaws-after-dramatic-boro-clash/) undermining their attacking progress.

Norwich now face a swift turnaround before they travel to face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Thursday.
