Norwich progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Wednesday after beating Tottenham on penalties.
Spurs took an early lead through Jan Vertonghen’s cushioned header. Giovani Lo Celso put a beautiful ball to the back post where the Belgian centre back had an easy task to bag his first goal of the term in the FA Cup.
After that, the game was very end-to-end before the Canaries took control in the final moments of the first half.
In the second 45, Daniel Farke’s side dominated until they finally equalised through a scruffy Josip Drmic finish. Kenny McLean struck straight at Michel Vorm from outside the box and the Dutchman spilt the ball into the path of Drmic who had a simple task of bundling home.
For the final ten minutes, Spurs dominated and came very close to the winner but they couldn’t find one. Extra time was very equal with fatigue becoming a big part of the game.
Then came penalties, or as Norwich fans have been saying, Tim Krul’s time. Norwich missed their first penalty and Spurs scored it and it was looking like another penalty shootout disappointment.
But after two saves by Krul and the Canaries scoring the next three, they progressed to the next round.
With that in mind, here are our player ratings…
Tim Krul - 10
Opposition fans will point the finger at Krul being off his line but nevertheless, saving two penalties in a shootout is impressive. In normal time, he raced off his line to beat Dele Alli to the ball and made solid saves throughout the game.
Max Aarons - 9
Space on the right-hand side became a recurring theme and he exploited it well.
Grant Hanley - 8
Looked like he was carrying an injury due to tiredness late on but still did a job both as captain and defensively.
Ben Godfrey - 8
Threw himself at the ball to deny Serge Aurier a certain goal on the line and his passes always found their intended target. Suffered from fatigue late on which caused a few mistakes but that’s expected.
Jamal Lewis - 8
Played more like a winger at times and made a good one! The Northern Ireland international showed pace and an end product which are qualities wingers need but his attacking antics did leave holes at the back which Spurs gladly exploited early on.
Tom Trybull - 8
Filling in for Tettey is a difficult job but he did well on the whole.
Mario Vrancic - 8
Not his best performance in a yellow shirt but it was in no way a bad display. His touch let him down but his passing was exquisite and he was at the heart of everything Norwich did when attacking.
Todd Cantwell - 9
His endless running brought City a lot of success and his end product was there which has been lacking in recent weeks. Also buried an unstoppable penalty into the top corner to cap off an impressive night.
Lukas Rupp - 7
Showed flashes of quality but made some poor passes and his positioning was off. Failed to get a shot off when he had the chance to in the first half and couldn’t get enough power on the ball to beat Vorm from outside the box a few minutes later.
Emi Buendia - 8
Another who was crucial to City when attacking, Buendia was, as he always is, at the forefront of everything Norwich did.
Josip Drmic - 9
Scored his third Norwich goal with a less than pretty finish and was brilliant all day. He didn’t give the defenders a moments peace and his off-ball runs caused the Spurs defence endless grief.
