Wes Hoolahan retires from international football
Wes Hoolahan has announced his retirement from international football after making over 43 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.
The Norwich midfielder made his decision, citing that he would be 38 by the time the next international tournament, the European Championships, came around in four years time.
Hoolahan made his last appearance for the Republic of Ireland in a defeat to Denmark. The result meant that Ireland missed out on this Summer’s world cup.
The 35 year old made his debut for the national side whilst still at Blackpool in 2008. Hoolahan played in both the 2012 and 2016 European Championships, and described the last Euros as a great experience.
Hoolahan has struggled to get into the Norwich side this season. James Maddison has impressed massively, keeping the veteran play maker out of the team. However, Hoolahan will be hoping to prolong his career by ending his international career with Ireland.
